After five years of service, the Providers Card program will end on June 5, 2025. This means you will no longer be able to use your Providers Card and your debit account will be closed on this date.
This does not impact your EBT or SNAP (food stamps) and the Propel app is here to stay.
We’re sorry for any inconvenience this may cause and are here to help with your transition to another bank account.
What to do next#what-to-do-next
- Update any direct deposits to a new account as soon as possible. Deposits will be returned to sender starting May 5, 2025, ahead of the final program end date on June 5, 2025.
- Transfer your remaining balance to another account, or spend it down.
- Change the payment method for any recurring payments.
Once you've followed these steps, you can close your Providers Card account in the Propel app. You must have a $0 balance to close your account.
Switch to Chime and get $100
To help with this transition, we've partnered with Chime®. Chime offers a similar checking account and Visa® Debit Card and is giving $100 to anyone who transfers a qualifying direct deposit to a new Chime account within 30 days*. Use promo code EARN100 when you open a new account.
Frequently asked questions
#frequently-asked-questions
Does this impact my EBT or SNAP (food stamps)?#does-this-impact-my-ebt-or-snap-food-stamps
No, this does not impact your EBT or SNAP (food stamps). The Providers Card is a debit account where you may have certain government benefits deposited, like Social Security or Disability payments. The Providers Card is not connected to SNAP (food stamps) payments.
How do I update my Social Security direct deposit?#how-do-i-update-my-social-security-direct-deposit
Call the Social Security Administration at (800) 772-1213 to update your direct deposit information, either to another account you already have or to a new Chime account.
If the SSA asks for your account and routing number, you can view them by clicking on "Mobile banking" in the Propel app, and then clicking on "Manage account."
How do I update my payroll direct deposit?#how-do-i-update-my-payroll-direct-deposit
Contact your employer to update your direct deposit information, either to another account you already have or to a new Chime account.
Do I have to switch to Chime or open a Chime account?#do-i-have-to-switch-to-chime-or-open-a-chime-account
No. If you have been using your Providers Card, you need to switch to another bank account. But you can choose any bank you want. We think Chime is a great option, but you do not need to switch to Chime. If you have not been using your Providers Card, all you need to do is tap "Close Providers Card account" in the app.
I have my tax refund coming to the Providers Card. What does this mean for me and what can I do?#i-have-my-tax-refund-coming-to-the-providers-card-what-does-this-mean-for-me-and-what-can-i-do
You can receive tax refunds to the Providers Card through May 5, 2025. By April 15th, if you have not yet received your refund, call the IRS to update your deposit information directly at (800) 829-1040, Monday through Friday, from 7am to 7pm. Ask to speak to someone in Account Management.
I have survey earnings. What does this mean for them?#i-have-survey-earnings-what-does-this-mean-for-them
Make sure to cash out your balance and transfer your funds to another bank (or spend them) before Providers Card stops accepting new funds on May 5, 2025.
How do I transfer my money off my Providers Card?#how-do-i-transfer-my-money-off-my-providers-card
- Log in to your other bank account or payment app (Cash App, Venmo, or Facebook Pay) and transfer funds directly from that bank account or app. You may need to enter your Providers card number (for Cash App), or your account and routing number to link your accounts (for other apps or bank transfers). To view your Providers account and routing numbers, click on "Mobile banking" in the Propel app, scroll down, and click on "Manage account."
- You can also spend down your balance on your Providers Card if this is simpler for you; you can do that as normal (using your physical or virtual card) until June 5. We recommend spending down the balance sooner rather than later, so you can close your account ahead of the end date.
What should I do if I pay bills using this account?#what-should-i-do-if-i-pay-bills-using-this-account
Visit the websites of your service providers directly to update your billing information; any recurring charges that occur starting June 5, 2025 will be declined.
I liked this card. Why are you closing it down?#i-liked-this-card-why-are-you-closing-it-down
Our debit card wasn’t working as a business. We set out to offer a card with no monthly or hidden fees, and rather than change that, we made the difficult decision to end the program.
This allows us to focus on what we do best—improving EBT tools, benefits updates, and personalized ways to save money. The Propel app isn’t going anywhere.
We know switching banks can be difficult, and we want to help. Check out the information we've provided on this page and in-app, or call us at (877) 847-1257 with any questions.
Where can I get my account statements?#where-can-i-get-my-account-statements
We encourage you to download your statements prior to account closure. After you close your account, you can contact Propel Support to access your transaction history.
What happens if I don’t move my money by the deadline?#what-happens-if-i-dont-move-my-money-by-the-deadline
If your balance is above $1, we will mail a check with your remaining balance to the most recent mailing address we have on file for you. This may take several weeks, so we highly recommend planning to spend down your balance or transfer it off Providers Card instead (rather than waiting for a check).
If you do expect to need a check mailed, confirm your mailing address in the Propel app. Click on "Mobile banking" then click on "Manage account." You should see your current address on your Account page. If it needs to be updated, click on it and follow the prompts.
What should I do with my physical card?#what-should-i-do-with-my-physical-card
Please cut up and dispose of your Providers Card once you have closed your account (or after June 5, 2025).
I have more questions and want to speak to someone.#i-have-more-questions-and-want-to-speak-to-someone
Please call us at (877) 847-1257 if you have any more questions.
