If you recently applied for SNAP benefits or another program that uses an EBT card (like TANF), or you requested a replacement EBT card, you’re probably wondering when your card will arrive.

Here’s how to know when your new EBT card has shipped and what to do while you wait.

Most states do not send automatic shipping updates when your EBT card is mailed. But there still are a few ways to check the status of your EBT card to see if it’s on its way to you:

  • Sign up for USPS Informed Delivery: USPS Informed Delivery is a free service that sends you daily email updates showing what mail is arriving at your address soon. You can sign up online with your home address and email address
  • Look for a USPS tracking number: Some states include tracking on replacement cards or let you request tracking when you call the EBT customer service line. If tracking is available, you’ll receive a USPS tracking number by text, email, or through your state’s benefits portal
  • Call your state’s EBT customer service line: You can find your state’s EBT customer service number here. When you call, you will likely reach an automated system; select the option to review “card mailing status” or speak with a representative if that option is not available
  • Look out for a plain white envelope in the mail: EBT cards are mailed by your state; the envelope usually looks like regular mail, white and unmarked. Be careful not to throw it away
  • Check the mail that arrived with your approval notice: If this is your first EBT card, it may arrive around the same time as your SNAP approval letter or even in the same envelope (but it’s usually in a separate envelope for security reasons)

How long does it take to get an EBT card?#how-long-does-it-take-to-get-an-ebt-card

How long it takes to get an EBT card in the mail can vary depending on the reason you’re getting a new card:

  • First applying for SNAP: If you applied for standard SNAP benefits, your application will usually be reviewed within 30 days. Once approved, your EBT card is mailed and arrives within 5 to 10 business days of the approval date
  • Applying for emergency SNAP: If you qualify for Emergency SNAP, also called expedited benefits, your application will be reviewed much faster, often within seven days. Emergency SNAP is meant for people or families with little or no money for food or who have very low incomes. Your EBT card is mailed right after approval, so you’ll usually get it within 5 to 10 days of applying for SNAP if you qualify for emergency benefits
  • Getting a replacement EBT card: If you report an EBT card lost, stolen, or damaged, your state will mail a replacement card within 5 to 10 business days from when you report the issue. Some states offer overnight or tracked shipping if you call their EBT customer service line, but there may be a small fee

When should I replace my EBT card?#when-should-i-replace-my-ebt-card

You should request a new EBT card if:

  • Your card is lost or stolen
  • You see unauthorized or suspicious transactions on your EBT account (you can keep track of your transaction history using a trusted EBT app like Propel)
  • Your EBT card is damaged, or the chip or magnetic stripe no longer works
  • You think your card information may no longer be private for any reason

If you see transactions you don’t recognize, report the suspicious activity immediately by calling your EBT customer service number. You can freeze your EBT card to protect your remaining benefits and request a replacement card.

To replace your existing EBT card:

  1. Call your state’s EBT customer service number
  2. Report your EBT card as lost, stolen, or no longer safe to use. This will deactivate the old card to protect your balance, so your remaining benefits get transferred to the new card
  3. Confirm your mailing address and ask when to expect your replacement (remember to ask if you can have a tracking number)
  4. Watch your mail for the plain white envelope, it should arrive within 5 to 10 business days

If you need your benefits sooner, ask whether your state offers in-person pickup for new EBT cards or expedited shipping options.
