Will the federal government withhold SNAP funds from certain states?

On Tuesday, Dec. 2, U.S. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said in a meeting at the White House that the federal government will “stop moving federal funds” to states that refused to share data about SNAP recipients.

A number of states have said they refuse to share SNAP data with the federal government, including California, New York, and Minnesota. But SNAP recipients in those states should still expect to get their December benefits on time and in full.

The warning from Rollins refers to administrative funding—that’s the money that states use to operate their programs, not the money that gets sent out to your EBT card every month.

Whether or not the federal government can deny administrative funding to specific states in this instance will likely be resolved in court, but either way, SNAP recipients across the U.S. can expect their December benefits as normal.
