How does the Trump administration want to change WIC?#how-does-the-trump-administration-want-to-change-wic
On May 30, 2025, the Trump administration proposed major cuts to WIC in its budget plan for the year.
The initial proposal contained a $300 million cut to overall WIC funding and significantly reduced cash value benefits—the part of your WIC benefits that lets you buy fresh, frozen, canned, or dried fruits and vegetables at the grocery store.
In June 2025, a few weeks after President Trump’s budget request, the House of Representatives put forward its own proposal which would cut overall WIC funding by $100 million, $200 million less than the president’s proposal.
These cuts could mean that not all eligible families will be able to participate in WIC services and will be potentially put on a waiting list.
Under the House proposal, families could also lose more than half of the fruit and vegetable benefit. Current WIC funding is guaranteed until September 30, 2025—but any cuts or changes to the program would go into effect starting October 1, 2025 or later.
What is the WIC ‘cash value benefit’?#what-is-the-wic-cash-value-benefit
WIC benefits give you a food package with specific foods like eggs, milk, or whole grain bread.
The cash value benefit part of WIC is separate—it gives you a specific dollar amount that you can use to choose the fruits and vegetables that work best for your family.

The answer isn't clear. Congress decides WIC funding, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) distributes the funding, and states run the program. Congress has already approved continued funding for WIC through September 2025.
But the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) has some control over how money gets spent, since the USDA reports to the president.
This means that while the administration can't end a program that Congress has already funded, it might be able to change how that funding is used, which could affect WIC payments.
