Yes, many gas stations with attached convenience stores accept EBT (Electronic Benefits Transfer). But not all items will qualify for EBT, and you shouldn’t assume all gas station convenience stores will accept EBT.

What is EBT-eligible at a gas station?#what-is-ebt-eligible-at-a-gas-station

If a gas station accepts EBT (also known as food stamps), you can buy the same items you’d buy at a grocery store with SNAP, including:

  • Snack foods, like chips, popcorn, and crackers
  • Cold drinks, bottled water, and ice
  • Dairy products, like cheese and yogurt
  • Bread and cereals
  • Ground coffee, coffee beans, or pods
  • Frozen prepared meals, like frozen or take-and-bake pizza
  • Energy drinks ( depending on the state)
  • Protein bars, meal replacement bars, or meal replacement shakes
  • Formula and baby food
  • Fruits and vegetables
  • Meat, poultry, and fish

As a rule of thumb, if the item has a “Nutrition Facts” label and you can eat it, you can probably buy it with EBT. But, some states are changing guidelines in 2026, banning certain “junk foods.

Not everything is SNAP-eligible at a gas station, such as:

  • Hot prepared beverages, including coffee and tea
  • Hot prepared food, such as rotisserie chicken or hot dogs
  • Gas
  • Alcohol, tobacco, and cigarettes
  • Toilet paper
  • Diapers

Does my local gas station accept EBT?#does-my-local-gas-station-accept-ebt

Gas stations must be SNAP-authorized retailers to accept EBT. If a gas station location has an attached convenience store, there’s a good chance you can use EBT, but here’s how you can confirm it:

  • Search the USDA SNAP Retailer Locator tool to find locations near you, including gas stations, that accept EBT. Large chains like 7-Eleven usually accept EBT.
  • Look for EBT signage, usually a sticker or sign, at the gas station entrance or near the checkout.
  • Ask a gas station employee whether the station accepts EBT and whether there are any purchase limitations. You can also check the gas station’s website, or call ahead.
  • Review your receipt after the purchase to confirm the correct items were charged to the EBT card.
