SNAP

SNAP income limits by state (2026)

Updated
Table of contents

To qualify for food stamps (officially known as SNAP benefits), you need to make under a certain amount of money each month.

The exact amount depends on your state and the number of people in your household. A household of one typically needs to make around $1,700-$2,600 or less per month before taxes in order to qualify for SNAP.

There are also special income calculations for households with seniors, gig workers and other self-employed people (like drivers for Uber or DoorDash), college students, people with disabilities, and people with certain immigration statuses.

In many states, if you already get TANF benefits, you may automatically qualify for SNAP too. But you’ll still need to submit an application and meet other requirements, like work rules and an eligibility interview

The maximum qualifying income level for SNAP is set every year in October. The 2025-2026 SNAP income limits apply from October 1, 2025, through September 30, 2026.

What’s the highest income to qualify for SNAP in each state?#whats-the-highest-income-to-qualify-for-snap-in-each-state

SNAP eligibility is based on your most recent income from the last 30 days, even if you made more in other months during the past year.

Just remember to report any changes to your income to SNAP. Your benefit amount may increase or decrease as your income changes, or you may no longer qualify for SNAP if you’re over the income limit.

When applying for SNAP, calculate your monthly household income by adding:

  • Work pay before taxes
  • Self-employment earnings
  • Child support received
  • Unemployment benefits
  • Other money received from any sources in the last 30 days

Income from freelancing or self-employment is calculated differently depending on the state. In some places, you subtract 40 or 50 percent from your total earnings, while in others you subtract your business costs to get your self-employment income. Your SNAP application will tell you how to determine your self-employment earnings.

Most states do not count savings or other assets when determining your SNAP eligibility. And households that include seniors (age 60 or older) or people with disabilities qualify based on net income rather than gross income.

To qualify for food stamps, your household income needs to be at or below the set monthly amounts by household size in your state.

SNAP income limits for seniors and people with disabilities#snap-income-limits-for-seniors-and-people-with-disabilities

If someone in your household is 60 or older or has a disability, you may still qualify even with a higher income.

These households are often evaluated using only net income (after certain deductions), not gross income, which can make it easier to qualify for SNAP. And in most states, savings and other assets aren't counted at all when determining SNAP eligibility.

Remember that gross income is how much money you make before taxes are taken out. Net income is how much money you make after taxes and other deductions are taken out.

Some regular expenses may count as deductions when you apply for SNAP, which can further lower what your SNAP agency considers your net income, including:

  • Rent, mortgage, or other housing costs
  • Medical expenses (for seniors and people with disabilities)

In the few states that have SNAP asset limits, households with a senior or a person with a disability are allowed to have more assets (up to $4,500) compared to other households (up to $3,000).

Since rules vary by state, contact your local SNAP office to learn more about how your household's income is calculated for SNAP if you have members who are seniors or have disabilities.
